RIDI and diversity and inclusion consultancy Delsion ran the Disability, Skills and the Future of Work roundtable event for business leaders at the University of South Wales in September. The event brought together members of the Welsh Government, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, the Federation of Small Businesses and the DVLA.
Julian John, MD of Delsion, started off proceedings by outlining some key facts about disabled people and employment in Wales including: 399,000 people of working age in Wales have a disability but only 171,000 of them are in employment and 69,000 of those who aren’t in work would like to be. This represents a huge, un-tapped talent pool for employers and recruiters in Wales.
Topics up for discussion included: the benefits of promoting disabled employability in organisations; what are the barriers to employing disabled people; what skills, experience and behaviours are employers looking for and what does the future of work look like?
The briefing paper from the event is available to download.
